it’s really hard reclaiming the word “lesbian” after growing up hearing homophobes use it as an insult and straight girls say “lesbian” with so much contempt and disgust like it stands for something perverted and disgusting. you internalise so much of that so when you realise you are a gay girl, you shy away from the word and sometimes from what it means. but really the word you hear when lesbophobes sneer it is far from what the word really means. with them it’s an empty word, stripped from its roots.
because “lesbian” is a beautiful word rich with history. it’s a word with struggles and victories and a community made up of incredible, thoughtful and inspirational women. it’s a word representing artists, musicians, writers and poets who refused to be silenced and erased. it’s the word for our subculture with its fashion styles and terms like “baby dyke” and intercommunity humour and quips. no matter how much lesbophobes try to make the word “lesbian” into something shameful, something that should be hidden away, they’ll never be able to. we exist and we’ll always take back our word.
